trail reports

What's your favourite type of riding?
Single track. Built or natural flowing, twisty, sweet single track, otherwise just going out and riding anything, jumping, downhill, or just cruising.

What bike do you ride?
At present a muddy fox rock n roll pro with junior Ts and an ex-dawes team bike (James Allaways). Reynolds 853 steel hard tail, custom built with disks. Also a raleigh road bike and muddy fox BMX. Soon to add to this, a Rocky Mountain company cycle for work.

Where's your favourite trail in Wales and why?
Dolthie Valley, Mid Wales. Big sky, big drops, big views, nice single track.

Whats your Mountain Magazine of choice?
Singletrack World or MBR.

What's been your worst wipeout and what where the resultant injuries?
Lots I'm afraid!!! (teeth, ribs and bones in general).

What's your background?
Word of my biking antics travelled as far as North Wales and reached Dafydd Davis who knew me through Singletrack Mind Mountain Bike Club at Afan Argoed. I'd just closed down my bicycle shop and was looking for a new challenge.

As for background in cycling, I' ve done cycle-cross as a teenager, time trialled, worked as a cycle mechanic before setting up my own business. I've raced and ridden for many years, including NPS series, Schmoos Welsh Championships, and socially with my children and friends (those who will own up to being my friends that is!!!)

How would you describe your job?

Surveying the tracks and doing formal inspections of them. Sorting out the resulting maintenance. Meeting and talking with mountain bikers. First Aid on the tracks. Dealing with the Forestry Commission managers for felling issues and liaising with other users of the forest. Giving weekly updates to MB Wales. Keeping up to date with info on other websites. Dealing with the press. Liaising with the 4 other mountain bike rangers in Wales. Organising volunteer groups to help with trail maintenance.

Sometimes fixing peoples bikes. Lots of walking and sometimes I even get to ride my bike!! Being the friendly face of mountain biking at Argoed!!
