Penhydd

Trail name: Penhydd
Centre:Afan
Distance:17km
Climbing:550m
Time:1.5 - 3hrs

"The original Afan trail, this tight twister is still mostly very natural ‘secret singletrack’ in feel. It’s not as groomed or fluid flowing as the later Afan trails and it can get claggy in places in winter but the steep verts, rooty sections and savage climbs all add to it’s Old Skool appeal."

Red Trail Grade (Difficult)
This is a very varied trail which combines forest road climbs with tight, technical, switchback trails through mixed woodland.

The open, flowing singletrack also crosses young plantations opening up fantastic views.

Big climbs followed by technical descents mean that this trail can be difficult and is exposed to bad weather on high ground.

Trail Reviews:
"I really enjoyed myself but had a slight accident negotiating a sharp switchback on sidewinder. No damage to me but a puncture to my front tyre. I was rescued by a group of four from Cheltenham who very kindly gave me an inner tube - peace and love to them!!" - Chris Wyatt from Swansea

"Hired Kona bikes at the Skyline shop at the centre-very high quality for their price! Penhydd is filled with long sections of sweeping singletrack - but every one of the sections come to an 'abrupt' end because of the 'gates' at the end. Not too much climbing, and a variety of singletrack too, from open views to the 'Hidden Valley' with fantastic switchbacks. It really fits into its surroundings - it doesn't look man-made at all!" - Gerallt R from Bangor

" I only rode the Penhydd Trail once but it made an impression from the start with a monster climb after a short piece of singletrack that had me wishing for a shock lockout. After this came a short piece of singletrack leading to another climb. Thankfully this was the last climb of real significance and the rest of the trail is mostly man-made singletrack incorporating lots of very tight switchbacks and obstacles consisting mainly of rocks and roots and stuttery bumps. It's the type of trail that can be tackled by different levels of rider at their own speed and still be challenging." - Neal from Shepperton
