Coed y Brenin and Nant yr Arian open again
Ranger Andy Braund has been in touch to say that they've been working flat out to clear the car park of ice and snow so that the Coed y Brenin visitor centre can open this weekend.
Hopefully Nant yr Arian will manage to stay open this weekend too having had their boiler fixed yesterday. With conditions changing hourly, let alone daily please ring the visitor centres (Coed y Brenin 01341 440747, Nant Yr Arian 01970 890694) for up to the minute information before you making solid plans.
Andy advises extreme caution for riders too, so go careful wherever you're riding:
The freezing level is around 200 to 400m, however you can expect to
find old compacted snow and ice below that especially in places which
don't get any sunshine. There are a few places where the ice can get
quite thick, even right across the forest roads.
People have been out on the trail and it really is up to you as to how
confident and capable you are in such conditions. The snow makes it much
harder physically. You will need to take extra food and water to keep
your energy levels up and stay hydrated. Be prepared for any
eventuality. The ice can catch out the most experienced. Preferably ride
with a buddy, take extra clothing, even an emergency shelter in case of
an injury. Most importantly leave details of where your going with a
competant person, give an estimated time of finishing and make sure you
let them know when your back.
I believe it is due to get milder by the end of the week so keep an eye
on the Snowdonia forecast which is updated daily...
