Most folks won't know of Radnor, the quietest of three
old counties that make up Powys, the emptiest county
in Wales, it nestles up against Herefordshire, itself
the most rural county in England. Almost a quarter of
Radnorshire is moorland. Hidden from view, as drivers
edge through the valleys to the sea, the high moorlands
have an altogether different feel; remote and largely
untouched by the 20th century, let alone the 21st!
Twm Tobbaccos Grave, the well of Kilvert's old scholar,
drovers' rest up stops and tracks; Hergest Ridge, not
a lot has changed, just imperceptably edging back to
nature, the hill farms long fallow. Man's touch blurred
by wind and water.

The rock is hard the soil thin, these tracks work
all the year round. No need for a full sus bike, just
good legs and lungs Not the worn rubble roads of the
english parks, this patch just escaped being designated
a welsh national park back in the sixties, and some
say it's better for it, certainly quieter.
To escape the stresses of the modern world, albeit for
the briefest of times, this is the place.
There are twenty three downloadable routes from four
different starting points, for GPs users also downloadable
as tracklogs files.
There's full details of local hostelries, even down
to the real ale!
Home of the Radnor RoughRide, Wales's most offroad mtb
enduro, and the Autumn Epic, Britains' top rated Cycle
Sportif. If we were near anywhere we'd be famous! Three
and half hours from London via Gloucester.
